If there was a way….

Monday, June 28th, 2010

There’s always a way!  As a matter of fact, there are many different ways… the road you choose to get somewhere doesn’t always need a roadmap… sometime, it’s just about putting your best foot forward, then the other, then just going with the flow until you find your rhythm… the path becomes clearer as you trot along…

Weightloss and fitness are no different.  We are told by trainers on tv, by nutritionists and dieticians that there is only one way to be healthy.  Eat less and exercise.  Well, there some truth to that. But it is also a fallacy to think that it’s the only way to go!  In my opinion, we also have to look at the way we lead our life.  For example, a high stress life actually slows down the weight loss process.  An unbalanced nutrition is also counter productive to weight loss.  It’s not always that we are eating too much, it may be that we are eating too much of one thing (even if it’s a good thing!)… A life without laughter is one that ‘weighs’ us down, lifting the cortisole levels that slow down weight loss.  A life that is full of regret, or guilt… a life that doesn’t include help from those who surround us… it all adds up…

It takes 1000 ‘I did great!’ to undo just 1 ‘I didn’t…’

We all have to be responsible at some point in our life.  We all have to do something or other, or take care of things-people… Life is just like that.

I’ve been thinking today that although we take responsibility for all that surrounds us; although we stay on task with all life’s demands… we don’t always take responsibility for our health.

My thoughts are that we should stop taking notice of what we don’t do… as in:  ‘I haven’t been to the gym, I haven’t been eating well, I’ve neglected myself…’ that sort of self talk only serves to confirm our actions or rather, our non-actions.  I believe that what should happen is taking notice of what we are doing, as in…..  “I have finished my chores, I have made a good dinner, I am walking…”  Positive self talk goes a long way to changing our behaviours.

Want vs Need vs Do…

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Want:  something we wish for

Need: something we have to have in order to survive

Do: a decision we make to satisfy our wants and our needs

I hear my clients say ‘I need to lose weight’ or ‘I need to get in shape’.  The truth is, none of them need anything!  They all want to reach a goal.  In reality, not many of us really need anything!

Excuse or Explanation?

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Excuse:  what we use to tell others the reason why we didn’t do something

Explanation:  what we tell people when there was no choice for not doing it!

I was working out with my trainer yesterday, a tough anabolic workout.  As we were going through it, I found that I was looking for excuses to bring down the intensity:

‘I can’t hold that weight, my arm is still sore’

‘I can’t do those pushups, my arm won’t support me’

Food Addiction or Emotional Eating?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Food is not an addiction.  It’s a life source!  The quality of the food is what we become addicted to!

Emotional eating is a defence mechanism, or a sedative.  We typically get addicted to two sources:  sugar and salt.  Biochemically, both these sources achieve the same goal:  making us bigger!  Back in caveman days, the bigger we were, the more threatening we were, “la loi du plus fort!”  Size is armour! Unfortunately, our central nervous system does not make the difference between an emotional threat and a physical threat.  It will release cortisol levels to deal with the stress which actually slows down weight loss, and increases our appetite to help put on size.  When we eat sugars, the higher on the glycemic index the better, a chemical reaction happens:  a release of endorphins, the feel good hormone! It’s a cycle:  the worst we feel, the more we want sugars, the more we eat sugars, the better we feel and now it’s become sedative!   We can find a lot of science to support that, but what can we do about it?

Therapist, Heal Thyself!!!

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I’m injured again… I just can’t believe it!  I almost feel betrayed!  I don’t even know how it happened.  I woke up one morning last week with a sore forearm and elbow.  This, after a particularly heavy loaded workout the day before followed by a heavy afternoon in clinic.  True to my stubborn self, I decided to work through it anyway, the way I usually do, it generally works itself out in time.  Physiotherapy on my own terms.  I worked out anyway, worked in the gym and clinic with my clients anyway, continued my usual routines carrying weights, setting up gym space…. Just a normal routine…  it’s been a week and…

Therapist heal thyself!  This morning, I can’t move my arm at all!

What I should have done:
