I have to admit, I love winter! I love the snowscapes, I love the feeling of the cold… I love all that warm clothing.. I love seeing my breath in the air… I love that wherever i go, I leave my footprints, the crunch of the snow… I just love it!!! Ok, enough already right?
I didn’t always love winter, as a matter of fact, until I began playing in the snow, I was like many people and just endured, hid away and did everything possible to just be inside… so what happened?
I’m not sure really.. I discovered an outside sport that I really enjoyed in spite of the cold. And then, as I excelled in the sport, I discovered a huge social circle that kept me coming back.. and then… I became one of the leaders, reached for certifications and before I knew it, I was in the cold EVERYDAY!! but being in the cold takes a little bit of planning.. Here are a few tips to help you out!
- 1) stay hydrated! water will keep your insides warm.. really!!
- 2) layer – start with a dryfit shirt, then an overlay, then your jacket! you can peel off as you go!
- 3) wear a hat, we lose most of our body heat from our head
- 4) do not overbundle at the neck, the air flow has to happen so that your body stays temperate!
- 5) if your feet are cold, change your socks! humidity and condensation holds in the socks!
- 6) wear clothes that does not hinder movement. The less you move, the colder you’ll be.
- 7 ) fuel… and fuel well… you’ll need the extra energy to stay warm!
The secret to loving cold weather is comfort. If you stay warm while you play, you’ll never feel the cold. Take a minute to enjoy your surroundings… Kids do this naturally, why do we lose that feeling of wanting to build a fort, or throw a snowball, or feeling that freedom of a freefall…
Let’s do it! Today is my outside playtime and I plan to enjoy every moment!! What do you love to do? share with me I’d love new ideas to try something new…
